A CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF 91 CASES OF ODONTOMAS IN KOREAN

-Abstract-
The purpose of this study was to characterize the clinical parameters of odontomas
occuring in Korean, and to analyze their histopathological features. 112 cases of
odontoma which were consulted to Department of Oral Pathology, Seoul National
University Dental Hospital, were reviewed, and 91 cases which were suitable for the
purpose of this study were selected. 21 cases were excluded because of lack of clinical
information or poor quality of slides. When needed, paraffin sections were retrieved and
reexamined, and classified by the pathologic characteristics.
The results from this study were as follows.
1. In classifying odontomas by WHO classification, compound odontoma occupied 56.8％
and complex odontoma occupied 43.2％, and thus compound odontoma occurred more
frequently than complex odontoma.
2. Compound and complex odontoma occurred in maxilla more frequently than mandible,
but the most frequent local site were maxillary canine region in compound type and
mandibular molar region in complex type.
3. The mean age of detection of odontomas at the time of diagnosis was 18.40 years.
The odontoma occurred most frequently in the second decade(45cases), and followed by
the third decade(19 cases), below teen ages(16 cases), above the fourth decades(11cases)
in descending orders.
4. The odontomas occurred in male as 47.25％ and in female as 52.74％, showing slight
perdilection for female.
5. The most cases showed asymptomatic(74.73％), but 34％ of cases showed delayed
eruption. Additional signs and symptoma were painful swelling in 16.4％, nonpainful
swelling in 7.69％, pain as chief complain only in 2.2％.
6. In the histopathological appearances, ghost cell appered in 64.4％ of odontomas,
calcification in 42.2％, reduced enamel epithelium in 3.11％, and odontogenic epithelial
rests 13.33％, 3 cases of odontoma occurred in combination with Gorlin's cyst, and they
were all complex odontomas.
